What is mindful running?
Mindful Running is all about being fully present and engaged in the moment, being aware of your thoughts and feelings without distractions. You see, running has become a complicated activity that can be full of distractions. Distractions on the run such as people and noise or questions we ask ourselves such as how far and fast should I go. Thoughts of activities after the run can be distracting as well such as what am I going to make for dinner or maybe a big project at work has your mind running, no pun intended, and just like that a simple activity of putting one foot in front of the other becomes complicated. Hold on. Running is just that, putting one foot in front of the other. With an activity as simple and repetitive as running, it truly is the perfect activity to remove distractions and achieve mindfulness.
Let’s take a minute and think of your most recent run. Was it a good run or bad run? What made it good or bad? Did it feel rushed? What were you thinking about? You may not be able to answer all these questions and that’s ok. You may be able to answer all these questions and then some and that’s ok too. When we run, we find ourselves alone with our thoughts for extended periods of time and when that happens our minds like to wander. That’s human nature and that’s how our minds work but we can overcome this.
Together we will learn how to be present in our runs, check in physically, plan our runs before we go, notice our surroundings, be intentional, and more.
